These weavings are inspired but photographs from the Beech Hill Sydney mines archives housed at the Beaton institute. The images are of the interior of R.H Brown of Sydney Mines home also known as Beech Hill. The house was built in 1829 by the mining association for the first mine manager in cape Breton. The home can express as much as a portrait and brings forth so many universal feelings. The thing that kept my attention about these archival photographs was something I tried to convey in my jacquard weaving through a double weave structure. All the images had this fading along the edges, I couldn’t tell if this was an error when the photos were taken some around the turn of the century or if it was deterioration of afterwards as these photos were housed together in an album. But this imperfection created a narrative for me of this mist or fog rolling in.
